Sheep
River
An out-and-back into the Sheep River valley south of Calgary. Long roads, sustained climbing, and two passes through Diamond Valley at the base of the main climb.
About This Route
The Sheep River is an out-and-back — 152km that pushes south from Calgary into the foothills, climbs deep into the Sheep River valley, and returns on the same roads. The route picks up the quiet ranch roads of the Priddis and Millarville corridors before the terrain begins to assert itself in earnest.
Diamond Valley sits at the base of the main climb, and you pass through it twice — once on the way out, once on the return. Use both stops. The climb above the valley is where the route earns its reputation, pushing toward a maximum elevation of around 1,600m before the turnaround.
Nearly 1,800m of gain accumulates across sustained drags and punchy rollers. The return is on the same road — exposed and open, with westerly winds a constant factor. Traffic is moderate through the Millarville and Priddis sections. Stay visible and ride predictably.
